PhD Student Frederick Zhang Represents Nuclear Materials Research at NuMat 2026

Our student Frederick Zhang attended the NuMat 2026 conference from 21-24th September in Halifax. This was one of the largest international nuclear materials conferences with a focus on materials and technologies in the nuclear industry. There were relevant talks in the fields of disposal of untreated or partly treated spent fuel and on zirconolite wasteform synthesis.

The conference offered an important opportunity to observe the different thought processes and techniques that people were using to solve different problems, and to think about how they might potentially be relevant to current work at ANSTO. This conference also emphasised the importance of scientific communication skills; the impact of both oral presentation skills and graphic design on maintaining audience engagement.
